On September 21st to 24th, a group of us traveled to Mont Orford, PQ to attend the 10th Annual RiboClub Opening Session. This year’s invited speakers included Dr. Ronald Breaker (the Godfather of Riboswitches), Dr. Joan Steitz, Dr. Alexander Rich, along with Nobel laureates Drs. Philip Sharp, Jack Szostak, and Tom Steitz. At the poster competition, three of our lab members- Casey Fowler, Simon McManus, and Bobbijo Sawchyn- were nominated as the top ten poster presenters. The evening finished with Bobbijo winning one of the best poster prizes. Congratulations, Bobbi!

   This year, our lab retreat was held at Golden Beach Resort on Rice Lake from August 25th-28th, 2009. We had plenty of great ideas proposed during our science sessions, and also talked about the careers of many reknowned scientists. During our downtime, we were able to partake in a number of different activities such as beach volleyball, tennis, hiking, and swimming. Thank you Dr. Li for a fantastic & extremely memorable week!

  Each year, the Li lab organizes a golf tournament at Chedoke Civic Golf Course for the members of the Biochemistry department here at McMaster. On August 14th, we had 8 teams of 4 participating in the tournament which made for the highest attendance of all 3 years. Afterwards, participants met at the Phoenix for a reception where prizes from our sponsors were distributed (donations were given from VWR, Bio-Rad, IDT, and GE Healthcare). All in all, it was a great day & are already looking forward to next year.

Congratulations to Ken Schlosser and Sergio Aguirre on their successful defences. Ken is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa, while Sergio became a research assistant in the Yingfu Li lab.

Many of our lab members were a part of the Canadian Society of Chemistry conference here in Hamilton from May 31st-June3rd, 2009. The meeting turned out to be quite a success, with great student talks and many award winners. Congratulations to the many presentation winners: Wendy Mok, Simon McManus, and Jeff Lam.

This year the Li Lab welcomes new members for the summer and beyond. Jing Wang has joined the lab as a PDF. Nirav Patel, Julie Peng, Tomasz Czarny, Pushpinder Kanda and Pranay Chander have added to our undergraduate ranks working on a variety of projects for the summer and into thesis projects.

The Li Lab welcomes several new members this summer. Tang Zhuo and Di Ouyang are joining the lab as new postdoctoral researches. Gina Demczuk will be working on her undergraduate thesis project and Andy Liu has joined the lab as a summer student. Sarah Frontczak has also joined us as an administrative assitant.
